Age Group Nationals - Day 4

Molly Gowans strikes again. Gold in 200Fr 2:05.40

In Montreal the fourth day of competition began with the 200 BR. Blair McDowell held back on the first 100 but roared back for a best time, a regional and club record and the bronze medal in 12 and under girls. Minutes later Jordan Andrusak swam from the front to lead thru the 100 but could not quite manage to hold off a fast charging field in the second half finishing in her second best time in 5th spot.

Another fine hot evening at Centre Aquatique Jean Drapeau was a good one for the team.

First up was the 100 Br - Blair McDowell was at it again and chased down the top group for her PB and sixth spot in

2013 Age Group Nationals - Provincial Record on Day Two!

It was a beautiful hot summer evening in Montreal for day two of the Canadian Age Group Championships. The 13-14 girls concluded the evening a silver medals and a new BC provincial record 8:51 for Jordan Andrusak, Blair McDowell, Molly Gowans and Lauren Crisp.

Great night for our crew. Four medals and three more top 6 finishes!

200 Backstrole - 13 year old girls
Lauren Crisp left no doubt who was going to top the podium leading decisively from start to finish with a winning time of 2:19.68.

Molly Gowans in her first Canadian Age National final bit off a lot on the first 25. Her enthusiasm cost her a bit in the overall race and was just off her morning performance. However her great effort put her in the bronze position on the podium.

Big Open Water Swims on Saturday

Richard Weinberger, having finished the Open Water World Championship 10km swim in Barcelona in 5th place, after making his life much harder by missing a buoy halfway through the race, is looking for redemption on Saturday when he races the World Championship 25km race.   He will be looking to win his first World Championship medal, and is excited to swim his first race of this distance.  UVic Alum Greg Streppel won the World Championship gold medal in the 25km race once before, and Richard is looking to follow in his footsteps.

Wow, do they take their open water swimming seriously in Roberval, Quebec.  Aimeson King is competing in the 10km World Cup race in Roberval, or specifically Lac St.-Jean tomorrow, July 25, as well as the historic 'Traversée Internationale du lac St.-Jean', which consists of a 32 km race, straight across the lake.

Richard Weinberger - 5th in 10KM race at worlds - Updated

After a hard fought race, Richard Weinberger has come 5th in the 10KM open water race at World Championships in a time of 1:49:19.9, finishing 8.1 seconds behind winner Spyridon Gianniotis.  Congratulations Richard!

Final Night of Summer Nationals ends with a BANG!

Jon McKay again dropped a ton of time in one of his best events today, this time in the grueling 1500 Freestyle.  Coming into this meet, Jon was already the club record holder in the 1500 for boys 15-17 years of age, with a time of 16:05.39.  Today, Jon dropped over 20 seconds to finish 5th overall in a time of 15:43.91!  Not only did Jon better his own club record in the 1500, but his 800m split of 8:19.45 also took over 12 seconds off the 800m club record, previously held by Zac Parkes.

Friday Nationals Update

UVPCS put forth more great swims at Summer Nationals today!  Evan Letkeman made the B-Final in the 200 Backstroke after swimming a Best Time of 2:10.06 - way to go Evan! At night Evan finished in 20th place with a time of 2:11.73.
