Swim BC proudly welcomes Dr. Peter Vizsolyi into the Hall of Fame, recognizing his remarkable contributions as both a Coach and a Builder in the sport of swimming. Over more than four decades, Peter has shaped the landscape of competitive swimming in British Columbia and across Canada. Guiding athletes, developing programs, and helping build the very foundations that support the sport today.
As head coach of the University of Victoria Vikes from 1983 to 2024, Peter led with a blend of technical mastery, consistency, and compassion. Under his leadership, Vikes swimmers earned 470 national medals, 58 top-10 team finishes, and represented Canada at countless international events, including 19 Olympic and Paralympic appearances. His athletes collected 77 international medals along the way, and Peter himself was twice named U-SPORTS Coach of the Year for his excellence behind the scenes and on the deck.
But Peter’s legacy extends far beyond results. A true builder of the swimming community. He serves as the Technical Director for Pacific Coast Swimming, forging strong pathways between club and varsity programs. His vision helped shape the Saanich Commonwealth Place, created for the 1994 Commonwealth Games, into one of Canada’s premier aquatic facilities, a cornerstone for generations of swimmers.
In addition to coaching, Peter has been deeply involved in governance and leadership at every level. He has served on Swim BC and Swimming Canada technical committees, contributed to the Canadian Swim Coaches Association, and supported athlete health and performance through his parallel career as a sports medicine physician.
Through it all, Peter’s focus has remained on people. The athletes, coaches, and colleagues who make the sport thrive. Known for his calm leadership and commitment to long-term development, he has mentored countless swimmers and coaches who continue to carry forward his philosophy of excellence, integrity, and community.
As Swim BC celebrates his induction, we recognize not only an extraordinary coach but a true builder of the sport, someone whose dedication and vision have left an enduring ripple through swimming in British Columbia and beyond.
