Canada Games 2025 St. John’s, NL
UVPCS athletes made a strong impression at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Maelle Sanborn and Alex Camaraire arrived early to train with the Newfoundland team and acclimatize before the rest of Team BC joined on August 8. Their preparation paid off, as all four PCS representatives left with medals.
Team BC finished third overall, placing second on the women’s side and third on the men’s. Prior to the Open Water competition, the team sat in second place behind Ontario. Despite a slower start on Day One, momentum quickly built, supported by an electric and energetic atmosphere throughout the week.
Athlete Highlights
Maelle Sanborn swept the breaststroke events, winning gold in the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke—all in personal-best times—and added another PB in the 400 IM. Sanborn set a Canada Games record in the 50m breaststroke and established new club records in the 50m, 100m, and 200m breaststroke, including the open club record in the 50m.
Alex Camaraire competed on three relays, earning three medals and playing a key role in two of them. He also broke the men’s 15–17 club record in the 50m freestyle and advanced to finals in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle, as well as the 50m and 100m butterfly.
Sophie Wood recorded multiple personal bests, including her first sub-:30 50m freestyle, and earned three podium finishes. She thrived in the competitive environment and embraced the Canada Games experience.
Roy Pan captured multiple medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m breaststroke, where he dropped 12 seconds and narrowly missed the provincial record. His energy and enthusiasm were evident throughout the Games, highlighted by his memorable participation in the Opening Ceremonies.
